Which States Are Reporting Mature Corn?

In the USDA Crop Progress report released on Aug. 18, seven states reported mature corn. The five-year average for the mature growth stage this time of year is 3%. Here’s a closer look at the states that reported.

Texas

Texas is leading the pack with the most mature corn being reported at 65%. That’s up 5 percentage points from the prior week. Texas is five points ahead of the five-year average for this point in the season. 

Texas corn was rated 2% very poor, 6% poor, 30% fair, 40% good, and 22% excellent for the week ending Aug. 18.

North Carolina

The USDA reported 52% North Carolina corn has reached the mature growth stage. That was an increase of 16 percentage points since the prior week. The five-year average for this time of year is 39%.

North Carolina’s corn was rated 1% very poor, 3% poor, 13% fair, 62% good, and 21% excellent.

Tennessee

In Tennessee, 11% of corn had reached the mature growth stage as of Aug. 18. This is the first time this year Tennessee has reported mature corn. The five-year average for the state is 7%. Last year, 16% of the corn crop was rated mature.

Tennessee corn condition was rated 5% very poor, 9% poor, 28% fair, 41% good, and 17% excellent.

Kentucky

Only 4% of corn had reached the mature growth stage in Kentucky. That’s on track for this time last year but 4 percentage points behind the five-year average of 8%.

The USDA rated Kentucky corn 3% very poor, 7% poor, 30% fair, 52% good, and 8% excellent.

Missouri

The USDA reported 3% of Missouri corn had reached the mature growth stage. That’s 3 percentage points behind last year and 1 percentage point behind the five-year average.

Missouri corn was rated 1% very poor, 4% poor, 18% fair, 58% good, and 19% excellent for the week ending Aug. 18.

Kansas

Only 1% of the Kansas corn crop had reached the mature growth stage. The crop is behind last year at this time by 5 percentage points. The five-year average is 5%.

The USDA rated Kansas corn 3% very poor, 10% poor, 27% fair, 44% good, and 16% excellent.

Ohio

The USDA reported 1% of Ohio corn having reached the mature growth stage. Last year at this time, 4% of the state’s corn crop was mature. The crop is on track with the five-year average.

Ohio corn was rated 1% very poor, 13% poor, 31% fair, 45% good, and 10% excellent.
