11 States Report Dented Corn

The USDA published its most recent Crop Progress report Monday, reporting for the first time this season which states had corn at the dented growth stage. Here’s a closer look at which 11 of the top 18 corn-growing states had dented corn.

North Carolina

The state had the most corn at the dented growth stage: 71%. that was an increase of 13 percentage points since the prior week. The five-year average for this time of year is 42%

North Carolina’s corn was rated 1% very poor, 3% poor, 19% fair, 60% good, and 17% excellent.

Texas

As of Aug. 3, 64% of Texas corn had reached the dented growth stage. That’s up 5 percentage points from the prior week and equal to this time last year. The five-year average for this point in the season is 62%.

Texas corn was rated 2% very poor, 12% poor, 32% fair, 36% good, and 18% excellent.

Tennessee

The USDA said 30% of Tennessee corn had reached the dented growth stage, up from 13% the prior week. That’s ahead of 26% last year at this time and the five-year average of 19%.

Corn condition in Tennessee was rated 1% very poor, 6% poor, 22% fair, 50% good, and 21% excellent the week ending Aug. 3.

Kentucky

The report said 20% of Kentucky corn had reached the dented growth stage. That’s equal to this time last year but 1 percentage point behind the five-year average.

The USDA rated Kentucky corn 2% very poor, 7% poor, 28% fair, 55% good, and 8% excellent.

Missouri

As of Aug. 3, 10% of Missouri corn had reached the dented growth stage; none had been reported the prior week. At this time last year, 19% had reached the dented growth stage. The five-year average in the state is 7%.

Missouri corn was rated 1% very poor, 4% poor, 16% fair, 58% good, and 21% excellent.

Iowa

The USDA said 9% of Iowa corn had reached the dented growth stage. That’s up from 4% the prior week. Last year at this time, 7% of the state’s crop was dented. The five-year average is 6%.

The report rated the Iowa corn crop 1% very poor, 2% poor, 12% fair, 57% good, and 28% excellent the week ending Aug. 3.

Kansas

Kansas reported 4% of the corn crop had reached the dented growth stage, up from zero the prior week. That trails the five-year average by 4 percentage points. Last year at this time, 9% of the state’s corn crop was dented.

The USDA rated Kansas corn 3% very poor, 9% poor, 26% fair, 44% good, and 18% excellent the week ending Aug. 3.

Wisconsin

In Wisconsin, 3% of the corn crop has reached the dented growth stage, up from zero the preceding week. That’s equal to this time last year. The five-year average is 1%.

The USDA rated the state’s corn crop 1% very poor, 3% poor, 15% fair, 57% good, and 24% excellent for the week ending Aug. 3.

Illinois

The USDA said 1% of Illinois corn had reached the dented growth stage. That trails by 2 percentage points last year’s report at this time, and the five-year average by 1 point.

The USDA rated the state’s corn crop 4% very poor, 5% poor, 22% fair, 52% good, and 17% excellent the week ending Aug. 3.

Nebraska

Just 1% of the corn crop was reported to have reached the dented growth stage. Last year at this time, 4% of the state’s crop was dented. The five-year average is 3%.

In the latest Crop Progress report, Nebraska corn was rated 1% very poor, 3% poor, 17% fair, 55% good, and 24% excellent.

North Dakota

The USDA reported 1% of North Dakota corn having reached the dented growth stage. That is ahead of last year’s’ zero crop, which reflects the five-year average at this time.

North Dakota corn was rated 1% very poor, 6% poor, 22% fair, 66% good, and 5% excellent.
