With agricultural tracks increasing in popularity, the question arises: “How do I read an ag track size and choose the best track for my machine and application?”
Dan Fullenkamp, Trackman business development director, said reading the track width and track circumference is typically the same for all manufacturers, but there are two different ways to write it: e.g. 252×36-inches or 36×252-inches.
“The larger number is the length of the track if you were to cut it and lay it flat, and the smaller number is the width of the track,” he said.
Not only do you need the size of the track, but you also need the type of equipment and application it will be used for.
“Each track is specifically designed for the machine weight, horsepower, and application, by manufacturer,” said David Graden, Camso operational market manager, agriculture.

These specifications will include varying carcass thickness (which include cables, alignment, and reinforcement plies), drive lug shape, size and spacing, and tread bar differences for varying applications.
All ag track manufacturers have reference guides to enable producers to make the best choice for their specific needs.
“My best advice is to consult manufacturers websites and look for vehicle compatibility lists, or contact manufacturers engineering to establish the application compatibility with specific application,” said Eric Halstead, Soucy rubber tracks technical expert. Dealers are also a good source of information on the different track options available.
