Farmers End April With Double-Digit Planting Progress for Major Crops Week-Over-Week

Today, USDA published its latest Crop Progress report of the 2025 growing season. Here’s a look at the latest numbers for corn, soybeans, wheat, and oats.

Corn Crop Progress

As of April 27, 24% of the corn crop across the nation’s top 18 corn-growing states had been planted. That’s ahead of the five-year average of 22%.

All top states have corn planting underway, according to USDA.

Five percent of the corn crop has emerged across nine of the top corn-growing states. That’s ahead of the five-year average by 1 percentage point.

The states with corn emergence are the following:

  • Illinois: 2%
  • Iowa: 2%
  • Kansas: 11%
  • Kentucky: 5%
  • Missouri: 15%
  • Nebraska: 1%
  • North Carolina: 39%
  • Tennessee: 15%
  • Texas: 67%

Soybean Crop Progress

The USDA said that as of April 27, 18% of the soybean crop across the nation’s top soybean-growing states had been planted. That’s ahead of the five-year average of 12%.

Soybean planting has begun in all top 18 states.

Winter Wheat Progress and Condition

The USDA reported that 27% of the winter wheat crop across half of the top 18 states had headed as of April 27. The five-year average is 22%.

For the week ending April 27, the condition of the nation’s winter wheat crop was as follows:

  • Good/excellent: 49%
  • Fair: 32%
  • Poor/very poor: 19%

Spring Wheat Progress

In the top six spring wheat-growing states, 30% of the crop has been planted. That’s ahead of the five-year average of 21%.

Five percent of the spring wheat crop had emerged across four of the top six states by April 27. That’s on track with the five-year average of 5%.

Oat Crop Progress

Across the nine top oat-growing states, 61% of the season’s planting is complete, according to the USDA. That’s ahead of the five-year average of 53%.

Across all nine states, 37% of the oat crop had emerged by April 27.
