Democratic Lawmaker Begins Steps to Impeach RFK Jr.

U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens, a Michigan Democrat, has long voiced discontent with the nation’s Health and Human Services secretary. Now, citing “absurd conspiracies, putting lives in danger, and raising healthcare costs,” Stevens said she is wanting to do something tangible about it and announced she is drafting the paperwork to impeach Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Kennedy has long been a divisive figure both in agriculture and in the broader health sector. Most recently, he was the architect behind the effort to place the blame on acetaminophen, commonly sold under the brand name Tylenol, for cases of autism in the United States. And his upheaval of vaccine policy has rankled even those loyal to President Donald Trump. In the agricultural space, Kennedy has bucked scientific consensus to lambaste crop protection products and genetic engineering without any evidence to back up his claims — though he did pull back on some of those attacks in a recent report from his MAHA Commission.

Stevens specifically has taken issue with Kennedy’s cuts to funding for cancer research, infant death syndrome, and combating addiction.

“Michiganders and families across the country are paying the price for RFK Jr.’s agenda. Enough is enough,” Stevens said in a post on X announcing her impeachment initiative.

Health care chaos. Reckless cuts. Rising costs. Michiganders and families across the country are paying the price for RFK Jr.’s agenda. Enough is enough, which is why I’m drafting articles of impeachment against @SecKennedy

The U.S. House of Representatives has only impeached two Cabinet members in history: one was William W. Belknap in the 19th century, while the second was Alejandro Mayorkas, the Biden Administration’s Secretary of Homeland Security. Neither attempt was successful.

Considering that Republicans have the edge in the House by a split of 219-213, it seems unlikely that an impeachment process would be at all successful. According to a recent report from CNN, Kennedy is actually the most popular member of Trump’s Cabinet, but there’s a big caveat: More people (7 percentage points more) view him unfavorably rather than favorably.

In a statement on her website, Stevens further explained her issues with Kennedy and why she’s drafting the articles of impeachment. She said:

“His contempt for science, the constant spreading of conspiracy theories, and his complete disregard for the thousands of research hours spent by America’s top doctors and experts is unprecedented, reckless, and dangerous. Enough is enough – we need leaders who put science over chaos, facts over lies, and people over politics.”

Kennedy has run the agency with a heavy hand, for example, removing all members of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisory committee on immunization, and then filling the vacancies mostly with anti-vaxxers and conspiracy theorists. These kinds of actions have drawn numerous calls for him to step down, including from more than 1,000 current HHS employees who spoke out earlier this month in an open letter.
