Deputies Offer $3,000 Reward After Family’s Bison Killed in Texas

Law enforcement in Cooke County, Texas, is investigating a case of suspected animal cruelty after a bison was unlawfully shot, decapitated, and left on private property south of Lindsay, according to the sheriff’s office.

The incident occurred sometime between Nov. 23 and Nov. 26, 2025, on the Neu family’s bison ranch, a property near County Road 301 and FM 3208 (also reported as FM 3108), authorities said. Investigators believe the suspect or suspects removed the animal’s head and left the remaining carcass behind.

“I could smell something dead, and I told my wife we needed to go check the fence line. Something was wrong,” Shawn Neu told WFAA reporters.

In interviews with local media, the family said they don’t believe it was a random shot at wildlife. They believe the person responsible came onto their land and targeted the animal. The bison was also a mother, and the family said her calf remains on the ranch without her.

“It is completely uncalled for and disrespectful,” Neu said. “The way that the head was severed off, it was a clean cut across.”

As the investigation continues, the family said they’re now more concerned about the safety of their remaining animals and have installed surveillance cameras on the property. A reward of $3,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest of those involved.

If the case is filed as a third-degree felony under Texas law, the punishment range can be 2 to 10 years in prison (with potential fines), depending on circumstances and charging decisions.

The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information to call 940-665-3471. Those wishing to remain anonymous can email [email protected].
