USDA Reports Corn Harvest Underway in 8 States

In the USDA Crop Progress report released on Sept. 8, eight states reported harvested corn. Current progress across the eight states is 4%. The five-year average for harvested corn at this time of year is 3%. Here’s a closer look at the states that reported harvest activity.

Texas

Texas is leading the pack with the most harvested corn reported at 69%. That’s up 7 percentage points from the prior week. Last year at this time, 74% of the crop had been harvested. Texas is 6 percentage points ahead of the five-year average at this point in the season. 

Texas corn was rated 2% very poor, 6% poor, 30% fair, 40% good, and 22% excellent for the week ending Sept. 7.

North Carolina

The USDA reported 44% of North Carolina corn was harvested. Last week 29% of the state’s corn had been harvested. This time last year 31% had been harvested. The five-year average is 37%.

North Carolina’s corn was rated 1% very poor, 4% poor, 15% fair, 49% good, and 31% excellent.

Tennessee

Harvested corn in Tennessee was reported at 28%. That’s up 16 percentage points from the prior week. Last year at this time, 29% of the crop had been harvested. The five-year average for the state is 13%.

The USDA rated North Carolina corn 5% very poor, 10% poor, 30% fair, 41% good, and 14% excellent.

Kentucky

Kentucky was added to the list for the first time this year with 18% of corn reported harvested. That’s 2 percentage points behind last year but 8 percentage points ahead of the five-year average of 10%.

The USDA rated Kentucky corn 4% very poor, 9% poor, 39% fair, 41% good, and 7% excellent.

Missouri

The USDA reported 9% of Missouri corn had been harvested, and that’s up 5 percentage points from the prior week. It’s 3 percentage points behind last year but 4 percentage points ahead the five-year average.

Missouri corn was rated 1% very poor, 4% poor, 17% fair, 61% good, and 17% excellent.

Kansas

The USDA reported 2% of corn had been harvested in Kansas. The crop is behind by 11 percentage points compared to this time last year. The five-year average is 11%.

The USDA rated Kansas corn 3% very poor, 9% poor, 25% fair, 45% good, and 18% excellent.

Illinois

Illinois also reported only 2% of its corn harvested so far. That’s the same as last year at this time but one percentage point ahead of the five-year average of 1%.

The USDA rated Illinois corn 8% very poor, 9% poor, 30% fair, 41% good, and 12% excellent.

Indiana

The USDA reported 1% of Indiana corn was harvested. That’s on track with this time last year. Indiana is not normally included at this time, according to the five-year average.

Indiana corn was rated 3% very poor, 8% poor, 29% fair, 49% good, and 11% excellent.
