See Which States Lead in Crop Production, According to the USDA

Ever wonder which states make the list of top 18 corn-growing states, or which six states grow the nation’s spring wheat? From Iowa’s cornfields to North Dakota’s oat acres, these states lead the way in U.S. corn, soybean, wheat, and oat production.

Top 18 Corn-Growing States

According to the USDA, the following 18 states planted 92% of the 2024 corn acreage:

  1. Colorado
  2. Illinois
  3. Indiana
  4. Iowa
  5. Kansas
  6. Kentucky
  7. Michigan
  8. Minnesota
  9. Missouri
  10. Nebraska
  11. North Carolina
  12. North Dakota
  13. Ohio
  14. Pennsylvania
  15. South Dakota
  16. Tennessee
  17. Texas
  18. Wisconsin

According to the USDA’s June 2025 Acreage report, 90.6 million acres of corn were planted for 2024, and 95.2 million acres of corn were planted for 2025.

Top 18 Soybean-Growing States

According to the USDA, the following 18 states planted 96% of the 2024 soybean acreage:

  1. Arkansas
  2. Illinois
  3. Indiana
  4. Iowa
  5. Kansas
  6. Kentucky
  7. Louisiana
  8. Michigan
  9. Minnesota
  10. Mississippi
  11. Missouri
  12. Nebraska
  13. North Carolina
  14. North Dakota
  15. Ohio
  16. South Dakota
  17. Tennessee
  18. Wisconsin

According to the USDA’s June 2025 Acreage report, 87.1 million acres of soybeans were planted for 2024, and 83.4 million acres of soybeans are estimated to have been planted in 2025.

Top 18 Winter Wheat-Growing States

According to the USDA, the following 18 states planted 90% of the 2024 winter wheat acreage:

  1. Arkansas
  2. California
  3. Colorado
  4. Idaho
  5. Illinois
  6. Indiana
  7. Kansas
  8. Michigan
  9. Missouri
  10. Montana
  11. Nebraska
  12. North Carolina
  13. Ohio
  14. Oklahoma
  15. Oregon
  16. South Dakota
  17. Texas
  18. Washington

According to the USDA’s June 2025 Acreage report, 33.4 million acres of winter wheat were planted for 2024, and 33.3 million acres of winter wheat were planted for 2025.

6 Spring Wheat-Growing States

According to the USDA, the following six states planted 100% of the 2024 spring wheat acreage:

  1. Idaho
  2. Minnesota
  3. Montana
  4. North Dakota
  5. South Dakota
  6. Washington

According to the USDA’s June 2025 Acreage report, 10.6 million acres of spring wheat were planted for 2024, and 10.0 million acres of spring wheat are estimated to have been planted for 2025.

Top 9 Oat-Growing States

According to the USDA, the following nine states planted 75% of the 2024 oat acreage:

  1. Iowa
  2. Minnesota
  3. Nebraska
  4. North Dakota
  5. Ohio
  6. Pennsylvania
  7. South Dakota
  8. Texas
  9. Wisconsin

According to the USDA’s June 2025 Acreage report, 2.2 million acres of oats were planted for 2024, and 2.3 million acres of oats were planted for 2025.
