14 States Report Mature Corn

In the USDA Crop Progress report released Aug. 25, all but four states reported mature corn. Here’s a closer look at the 14 states that reported, and the four that have yet to report at that crop growth stage.

Texas

Leading the pack is Texas, where 71% of corn has reached the mature growth stage. That’s up 6 percentage points from the prior week. Last year at this time, 74% of the crop was rated mature. Texas is ahead of the five-year average of 65%. 

Texas corn was rated 2% very poor, 6% poor, 30% fair, 40% good, and 22% excellent.

North Carolina

North Carolina is next on the list with 62% of corn rated mature. That represents a 10 percentage-point increase from the prior week. A year ago, 56% of the corn crop was at the mature growth stage. The five-year average for this time of year is 58%.

North Carolina’s corn was rated 1% very poor, 4% poor, 12% fair, 62% good, and 21% excellent for the week ending Aug. 24.

Tennessee

The USDA reported 36% of Tennessee corn had reached the mature growth stage. That’s 3 points ahead of this time last year and up 25 percentage points from the prior week. The five-year average is 19%.

Tennessee corn condition was rated 5% very poor, 9% poor, 29% fair, 41% good, and 16% excellent.

Kentucky

In Kentucky, 25% of corn had reached the mature growth stage. That’s a 21-point jump from last week and 3 percentage points ahead of this time last year. The five-year average is 22%

The USDA rated Kentucky corn 3% very poor, 8% poor, 33% fair, 47% good, and 9% excellent.

Missouri

The USDA reported 15% of Missouri corn had reached the mature growth stage. That’s 12 percentage points ahead of last week and 1 percentage point behind where the crop was last year. The five-year average is 8%.

Missouri corn was rated 1% very poor, 4% poor, 16% fair, 60% good, and 19% excellent for the week ending Aug. 24.

Kansas

In Kansas, 12% of the corn crop had reached the mature growth stage. That’s an 11 percentage-point increase over the previous week. Last year at this time, 18% of the state’s corn crop was reported mature. The crop is behind the five-year average by 1 percentage point.

The USDA rated Kansas corn 4% very poor, 10% poor, 27% fair, 43% good, and 16% excellent.

Nebraska

Nebraska is joining the list for the first time this year with 6% of the corn crop having reached the mature growth stage. Last year at this time, 15% of the state’s crop was mature. Nebraska’s crop is 2 percentage points behind the five-year average.

The USDA report rated Nebraska corn 1% very poor, 3% poor, 18% fair, 50% good, and 28% excellent.

Illinois

In Illinois, 3% of corn had reached the mature growth stage. Last year at this time, 9% of the state’s crop was mature. The five-year average is 4%.

The USDA rated the state’s corn crop 5% very poor, 9% poor, 25% fair, 45% good, and 16% excellent for the week ending Aug. 24.

Iowa

As of Aug. 24, 3% of Iowa corn had reached the mature growth stage. Last year at this time, 4% of the crop was mature. The state is on track with the five-year average.

The report rated the Iowa corn crop 1% very poor, 2% poor, 13% fair, 56% good, and 28% excellent.

Pennsylvania

In Pennsylvania, 3% of the corn crop had reached the mature growth stage. Last year at this time, 1% of the state’s corn crop was mature. The Pennsylvania corn crop is not normally on the list based on the five-year average.

The USDA rated Pennsylvania corn 0% very poor, 6% poor, 18% fair, 46% good, and 30% excellent.

Minnesota

Minnesota is also making its debut on the list with 2% of corn at the mature growth stage. Last year at this time, 4% of the corn had reached the mature growth stage. The state is on track with the five-year average.

The report rated the Minnesota corn crop 2% very poor, 5% poor, 17% fair, 53% good, and 23% excellent.

Ohio

The USDA reported 2% of Ohio corn had reached the mature growth stage. Last year, at this time, 8% of the state’s corn crop was mature. The five-year average is 2%.

Ohio corn was rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 30% fair, 53% good, and 10% excellent.

Indiana

In Indiana, 1% of corn has been reported as having reached the mature growth stage. Last year, 3% of the crop was reported as mature at this time. The five-year average is 2%.

Indiana corn was rated 3% very poor, 8% poor, 26% fair, 52% good, and 11% excellent.

Wisconsin

In Wisconsin, 1% of the corn crop has reached the mature growth stage. Last year, 2% of the crop had reached the mature growth stage. The five-year average is 1%.

The USDA rated the state’s corn crop 1% very poor, 4% poor, 12% fair, 58% good, and 25% excellent.

States Yet to Report

The states yet to report corn in the mature growth stage are Colorado, Michigan, North Dakota, and South Dakota. According to the five-year averages, Colorado, North Dakota, and South Dakota typically report by this time.
