Winter wheat in the United States is 39% headed, according to the most recent Crop Progress report. Take a closer look at the winter wheat condition across the top 18 growing states. 

Nationally, winter wheat was rated 6% very poor, 12% poor, 31% fair, 44% good, and 7% excellent in the Crop Progress report published May 5. 

Nebraska

Nebraska has the worst winter wheat condition in the country, according to the May 5 Crop Progress report. A little over one-fifth of the state’s wheat was rated very poor. 37% of the crop is in poor/very poor condition. Nearly 98% of Nebraska is experiencing some form of dryness or drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. 

According to the USDA’s March Prospective Plantings report, Nebraska farmers are expected to harvest 970,000 acres of winter wheat this year. 

Texas

In the Lone Star State, 30% of winter wheat is in poor/very poor shape. Only 5% of Texas’ winter wheat is in excellent condition. 

According to the USDA’s March Prospective Plantings report, Texas farmers are expected to harvest 5.5 million acres of winter wheat this year. 

South Dakota

Slightly more than a third of South Dakota’s winter wheat crop is in poor/very poor condition. There was no excellent winter wheat reported in the state. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, 100% of South Dakota is experiencing some form of dryness or drought. 

According to the USDA’s March Prospective Plantings report, South Dakota farmers are expected to harvest 800,000 acres of wheat this year. 

Kansas

In the state where the most winter wheat is expected to be harvested, slightly less than half of the crop is in good/excellent shape. One-fifth of Kansas’ winter wheat is in poor/very condition. 

According to the USDA’s March Prospective Plantings report, Kansas farmers are expected to harvest 7.3 million acres of wheat this year. 

Colorado

The USDA reported that Colorado’s winter wheat condition is 30% fair, while 17% was rated poor/very poor. 

According to the USDA’s March Prospective Plantings report, Colorado farmers are expected to harvest 2.1 million acres of wheat this year. 

Oklahoma

Slightly more than one-third of Oklahoma’s winter wheat was rated fair and less than half was rated good/excellent. 

According to the USDA’s March Prospective Plantings report, Oklahoma farmers are expected to harvest 4.15 million acres of wheat this year. 

Washington 

The USDA reported that 78% of Washington’s winter wheat is in good/excellent condition. Only 12% is in very poor/poor condition. 

According to the USDA’s March Prospective Plantings report, Washington farmers are expected to harvest 1.85 million acres of wheat this year. 

Oregon

Nearly half of Oregon’s winter wheat is in good condition, according to Monday’s report. USDA rated 17% of the state’s crop excellent.

According to the USDA’s March Prospective Plantings report, Oregon farmers are expected to harvest 750,000 acres of wheat this year. 

Indiana

A quarter of Indiana’s winter wheat crop is in fair condition, according to the USDA. Nearly 70% is in good/excellent condition this year. 

According to the USDA’s March Prospective Plantings report, Indiana farmers are expected to harvest 320,000 acres of wheat this year. 

Montana

Nearly 80% of Montana’s winter wheat is in good/excellent condition. Only 5% was rated very poor/poor in USDA’s report on Monday. 

According to the USDA’s March Prospective Plantings report, Montana farmers are expected to harvest 2.3 million acres of wheat this year. 

Ohio

One-third of Ohio’s winter wheat is reported to be in fair condition. The USDA also deemed half of the crop in good condition. 

According to the USDA’s March Prospective Plantings report, Ohio farmers are expected to harvest 570,000 acres of wheat this year. 

Illinois

The USDA rated half of Illinois’ winter wheat good in its Monday report. Only 1% was rated very poor. 

According to the USDA’s March Prospective Plantings report, Illinois farmers are expected to harvest 780,000 acres of wheat this year.

North Carolina

Nearly three-quarters of North Carolina’s winter wheat is in good/excellent condition. Only 5% was rated very poor/poor. 

According to the USDA’s March Prospective Plantings report, North Carolina farmers are expected to harvest 360,000 acres of wheat this year.

Arkansas

The USDA rated Arkansas’ winter wheat 48% fair and 41% good. None of Arkansas’ winter wheat is in very poor condition, according to the report. 

According to the USDA’s March Prospective Plantings report, Arkansas farmers are expected to harvest 120,000 acres of wheat this year. 

California

Winter wheat in California was rated 70% excellent by the USDA. Nearly 100% of the state’s winter wheat is in either good/excellent condition. None of the state’s crop was given a very poor/poor rating in Monday’s Crop Progress report. 

According to the USDA’s March Prospective Plantings report, California farmers are expected to harvest 290,000 acres of wheat this year. 

Idaho

One-third of Idaho’s winter wheat is in fair condition, said USDA on Monday. Only 2% of the state’s winter wheat is in excellent condition. 

According to the USDA’s March Prospective Plantings report, Idaho farmers are expected to harvest 790,000 acres of wheat this year. 

Michigan

USDA said 57% of Michigan’s winter wheat is in good/excellent condition. The report said none of the state’s winter wheat is in very poor condition. 

According to the USDA’s March Prospective Plantings report, Michigan farmers are expected to harvest 540,000 acres of wheat this year. 

Missouri

Slightly more than three-quarters of Missouri’s winter wheat is in good/excellent condition, said USDA on Monday. None of Missouri’s winter wheat was given a very poor rating. 

According to the USDA’s March Prospective Plantings report, Missouri farmers are expected to harvest 640,000 acres of wheat this year.
