From deviled to dyed, potatoes steal the Easter spotlight

With Palm Sunday behind us, Easter is quickly approaching — but this year, the holiday basket might look a little different. Easter eggs have remained a tradition for over 700 years, but this year, egg prices have remained stubbornly high, with the national average for a dozen eggs peaking at a record $6.23 in March 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Even as prices ease slightly, many shoppers are still paying over $3 per dozen, leaving some families rethinking their Easter traditions and others clutching their wallets every time they pass the egg section at the grocery store.

Enter the humble Easter potato. While they might not have the same nostalgic charm as a carton of brightly dyed eggs, spuds are quietly having their moment in the Easter spotlight. Retailing at an average of just 95 cents per pound in 2024, white potatoes have become the unlikely hero of holiday fun for budget-conscious families. And thanks to the internet, the creativity around these tubers has truly taken root.

Not to mention, a lost potato might sprout instead of just rotting.

A quick scroll through social media reveals that the Easter potato trend has gone full tilt. Posts are popping up everywhere showing everything from carefully painted potatoes with pastel patterns and googly eyes to fully dyed potatoes arranged in baskets, ready for an Easter morning hunt.

Others have leaned into the culinary angle, swapping deviled eggs for deviled potatoes — a creamy, savory spin that leaves no shell behind.

What started as a cheeky solution to rising egg prices has grown into a full-fledged alternative Easter movement. Parents, crafters and foodies alike are rolling with the trend, proving that where there’s a will — and a potato – there’s a way.

@gotmyfork Let’s ditch the typical eggs and reach for something a little more unexpected: potatoes! That’s right, you read that correctly – Easter egg dyed potatoes are a fantastic way to shake things up and add some excitement to your holiday festivities. https://thebestkidscraftsandactivities.com/easter-egg-dyed-potatoes/ #easter #easteregg #easterpotatoes #easterfun #fyp ♬ Good Vibes (Instrumental) – Ellen Once Again

So whether you’re tucking a russet under the couch for the kids to find or setting out a plate of paprika-dusted deviled spuds, this Easter might just belong to the potato.
