The fourth genetically engineered Arctic apple variety — the Arctic Gala — has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for commercial production.

The Arctic Gala — along with its predecessors, Arctic Golden, Arctic Granny, and Arctic Fuji — are the only apples that are specially developed to resist browning while sliced, capable of staying as fresh looking and tasting as fresh-picked fruit. By turning off the enzyme responsible for enzymatic browning, polyphenol oxidase (PPO), Arctic apple varieties resist browning caused by bruising and slicing, reducing the number of apples damaged throughout the supply chain and extending the shelf life of their fresh sliced products to an unprecedented 28 days.

These varieties are made by Okanagan Specialty Fruits, based out of Summerland, British Columbia. Approval by the FDA was the final hurdle for the Arctic Gala, which has already been given the thumbs up from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2021 and from Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency earlier this year.

“These approvals highlight the rigorous testing and evaluation processes that OSF adheres to, ensuring that consumers can enjoy Arctic apples with confidence,” said Dr. Muhammad Tahir, OSF’s Director of Research and Regulatory Affairs.

While genetically engineering has had a bumpy road to acceptance from many food and environmental advocates, the Arctic varieties have generally been more well received. Unlike something like genetically engineered corn or soybeans, the Arctic apple lineup is highly consumer-facing, giving shoppers longer-lasting produce and less food waste in a financially conscious way.

OSF, which was founded in 1996, said it plans to continue to expand its portfolio of nonbrowning Arctic apple varieties in order to extend its reach and to meet the evolving needs and preferences of its customers. The company notes that Arctic Honey and Arctic Pink are next on the horizon.
