Native American high school seniors looking to pursue a degree that will support the native agriculture industry may qualify for a $1,000 scholarship.
Akiptan, Inc., Native American Community Development Financial Institution provides loans and technical assistance to Native American agriculturalists. This year, Akiptan, Inc. is offering the next generation of native agricultural stewards Okhíčhaŋye, or Lakota for scholarships.
Twenty scholarships will be awarded for $1,000 each, and applications close on April 28 at 5:00 p.m. MST.
Students must be high school seniors graduating in the spring of 2023 and plan to attend college in the fall of 2023. Applicants must also be pursuing an agriculture-related degree including (but not limited to) animal science, agriculture business, agriculture economics, or horticulture.
Students will be required to submit tribal citizenship documents or proof of descendance of a federally or state-recognized American Indian tribe, Alaska native village, or native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander within the United States.
In order to complete the application, students will also need to complete essay questions regarding their backgrounds and interests in agriculture and the impact they hope to have in the native agriculture industry after graduation.
Also required will be two letters of recommendation, high school transcripts, and a college acceptance letter.
