According to USDA’s Crop Progress report for the week ending July 13, 7% of the country’s corn crop is at the dough growth stage.

A total of 11 top-producing states had corn at the dough growth stage: Six are ahead of the national average, and five are below it. Here’s a closer look at the numbers.

Texas

Texas leads the country in percentage of corn at the dough growth stage.

As of July 13, 69% of the state’s crop was at the dough stage, an increase of 11 percentage points since the week prior. With that, the state is easily outpacing last year’s progress, 62%, and the five-year average of 60%.

USDA rated 70% of Texas’ corn good/excellent, 21% fair, and 9% poor/very poor.

North Carolina

With half of its corn at the dough growth stage, North Carolina takes second place of the 18 top corn-producing states.

Progress jumped 13 percentage points during the week ending July 13. It’s 9 points ahead of a year ago at this time and 17 points ahead of the five-year average.

USDA rated 82% of North Carolina’s corn good/excellent, 14% fair, and 4% poor/very poor.

Tennessee

With 30% of its crop at the dough growth stage, Tennessee ranked third among its fellow corn-growing states.

Dough-stage corn increased 16 percentage points for the week in Tennessee and is a good deal ahead of historical averages. Last year at this time, 27% of the state’s corn was at the dough growth stage, and the five-year average is 23%. 

USDA rated 69% of Tennessee’s corn good/excellent, 23% fair, and 8% poor/very poor.

Missouri

Missouri ranks fourth for corn at the dough growth stage.

Jumping up from 9% the week prior, 20% of Missouri’s crop was at this stage as of July 13. That’s behind progress a year ago, 29%, but ahead of the five-year average, 12%.

Overall, 81% of Missouri’s corn was rated good/excellent, 16% was rated fair, and 3% was rated poor. None was rated very poor.

Kentucky

In Kentucky, 12% of the corn crop was at the dough growth stage, a jump from 4% reported the week prior. That’s ahead of progress last year at this time, 8%, and the five-year average of 6%.

The condition of Kentucky’s corn was as follows: 69% good/excellent, 26% fair, and 5% poor/very poor. 

Kansas

In Kansas, 11% of the state’s corn crop was at the dough growth stage, an increase of 9 percentage points for the week. Last year at this time, 14% was at the dough growth stage, and the five-year average is 9%.

In terms of the condition of the crop, USDA rated 69% of Kansas’ corn good/excellent, 25% fair, and 6% poor/very poor.

Illinois

Illinois’ dough-stage corn progress is just shy of the national average.

As of July 13, 6% of the crop had progressed to the dough stage, an increase of 5 points since the week prior. That’s behind progress a year ago, 7%, but ahead of the five-year average of 4%.

USDA rated 68% of Illinois’ corn good/excellent, 23% fair, and 9% poor/very poor.

Iowa

A total of 5% of Iowa’s corn had reached the dough growth stage as of July 13, which was an increase of 2 percentage points for the week. Last year progress was also 5%, but the five-year average is only 3%. 

Iowa’s corn condition was rated by USDA as follows: 85% good/excellent, 12% fair, and 3% poor/very poor.

Nebraska

Nebraska had the same percentage of corn at the dough stage as Iowa.

Dough-stage corn increased by 4 percentage points to reach 5% in Nebraska the week ending July 13. That’s behind the 7% reported last year at this time but ahead of the 2% five-year average.

Overall corn condition in Nebraska was 77% good/excellent, 19% fair, and 4% poor/very poor.

Indiana

In Indiana, 1% of the corn crop had reached the dough growth stage as of July 13, up from none reported the week before. The state’s behind last year’s progress, 3%, and the five-year average of 2%.

USDA rated 62% of Indiana’s corn good/excellent, 27% fair, and 11% poor/very poor.

Minnesota

Finally, 1% of Minnesota’s corn had reached the dough growth stage the week ending July 13. That’s up from none the week before and ahead of none a year ago. The five-year average is 1%.

Minnesota’s corn was rated 74% good/excellent, 20% fair, and 6% poor/very poor.
